“ 今、ここ ”は禅におけるひとつの教え、禅的な表現では「即今・只今・此処」となります。過去は過ぎ去ったものであり決して戻らず、また未来は未だやって来ません。どうにもならない過去を悔い、やって来ない未来を憂いても始まりません。私たちには「目前にある今」しかありません。わき目もふらず“ 今、ここ ”を生きぬくことの大切さを禅は教えています。書は、書きはじめから書き終わりまで、線の流れを追いながら筆の動きをたどることが出来ます。筆がどんなふうに動いたか、まるで現場にいたかのように想い描くことが出来ます。“ 今、ここ ”に生きた証しのように、時間と場所がしるされます。

“ QUI E ORA ” suggeriscono principi e idee derivati dallo Zen. Per il maestro Nakajima si sottolinea il concetto di partecipazione al tempo presente quando non si hanno pentimenti per le cose passate e nemmeno ci si preoccupa per le future. Quando si deve imparare a vivere con tutte le nostre forze nel tentativo di migliorarci nel posto dove stiamo e sempre nel tempo del nostro "ora". Del nostro qui e adesso. Seguendo il percorso dei tratti dall’inizio alla fine della calligrafia si potrà riconoscere sempre il movimento del suo corpo nell'attimo della sua stesura e scrittura. Rimane indelebile il segno e si potrà immaginare come si è mosso, proprio come se si fosse stati presenti nell'attimo dell'esecuzione. Nel suo lavoro vuole esprimere il tempo come traccia della verità che ha vissuto. Qui e in un dato momento particolare.

“ Now & Here ” suggests a principle idea derived from Zen. There is no use in regreting what has passed and worrying about the future. We should live at the every moment with all our might and do our best in the present position. You can recognize the movement of my brush by tracing the lines from the top to the end. You can image how my brush moved as if you were in the site. I want to express time in my works as a track that shows the truth I had lived at that moment.

展覧会のテーマは＜自然＞。今回の展覧会では、日、月、水、風など、自然にかかわる文字を書いた作品を２５点展示しています。「自然」を言葉で表す時、西洋では ＜Nature＞ ですが、これは ＜Man＞ に相対した言葉です。つまり主体である「人」と客体である「自然」が対峙し、「人」は「自然」を制御する対象としてとらえます。一方、東洋の 「自然」 という言葉は、人を含めた万物全体を指します。人も自然の一部。この言葉には自然を敬い、畏れながら、自然とともに生きていく価値観が込められています。私は墨のにじみやかすれ、たまりなど、自然の力を偶然の美として作品の中に取り込みたいと考えています。

Il titolo della mostra è ＜SHIZEN／Natura＞. “ SHIZEN ” è “ Natura”in italiano. Ci sono 25 lavori calligrafici nella galleria. Tutti gli ideogrammmi significano qualche cosa di natura. Per esempio, sole,luna,acua,vento…. Da molto tempo, in Giappone si crede che gli dei vivono in tutte le cose in natura. Nell'Ovest, la parola “ natura ” significa ambiente naturale. Ma nell'Est, la “ natura” include non solo ambiente ma anche un uomo. L’uomo è considerato come una parte di natura. Io credo che ora è il tempo per coesistenza con natura. Io finisco opere collaborando con forza di natura. Dopo ho fatto, l’inchiostro si estende lentamente. Quando l’inchiostro si è asciugato, la mia opera è completata finalmente. Questo fenomeno supera il controllo delle mie mani. Ma io accetto la natura accidentale nei miei lavori

The title of this exhibition is ＜SHIZEN＞. “ SHIZEN ” is “ Nature”in English. 25 works are shown in the gallery. All of works are made by characters that signify nature, for example sun, moon, water, wind…. In the West, nature is regarded as a concept that human beings stand against. But in the East, the word nature means not only natural environment but also human beings. Human beings are considered as a part of nature. I believe that the 21st century is a time for coexistence with nature. When the work is made, I keep myself in the sense of nature. The running of ink spreads slowly on the paper. After it dries my work is finally finished. It is unexpected and beyond the reach of human hands. But I do not want to suppress it. Technique controls a natural phenomenon, but I accept the accidental nature and incorporate it’s beauty into my works.

イタリアから帰国した翌日、３月１１日に宮城県石巻市を訪れました。石巻市は、東日本大震災の被災地の中でも浸水面積が最も広く、宮城県では最も多くの死者が出たところです。
石巻市の東部、太平洋に面したリアス式海岸にある雄勝（おがつ）は、国内産の硯（すずり）の９割のシェアをもつ「日本一のすずりの里」です。雄勝硯は600年の歴史と伝統を誇り、今も昔ながらの手づくりの製法により、ひとつ一つ丹念に彫り上げられています。室町時代から高い評価を受け、伊達政宗公も絶賛したと言われており、1985年には国から伝統的工芸品の指定を受けました。

３月１１日の大津波は、湾に入ってさらに高さを増しながら雄勝に襲いかかり、町のほとんどは壊滅してしまいました。波は容赦なく硯職人の工房や自宅をのみこみ、町内にあった１０箇所の工場は全て流されてしまいました。
今、生産販売共同組合のみなさんは、事務所兼作業場として建てられた仮設プレハブを拠点に「伝統の灯を絶やさない」との思いで再起をかけています。近年は硯だけでなく、屋根材や食器、工芸品などの新事業展開にも力を入れながら伝統工芸の継承を図られています。ちなみに雄勝の石は１９１４年に建てられた東京駅赤レンガ駅舎の屋根にも使われ、現在の駅舎復元工事でも採用されています。
私が訪れた時は、津波で流されてしまった硯を回収し、泥を洗い流して補修する作業に追われていました。今後も生産拠点の整備はもちろん、石切り場に至る道路整備や重機の確保、若手の育成などに向け、息の長い支援が求められています。

筆・墨・硯・紙を指して文房四宝と言いますが、書をたしなむ人たちにとって硯はやや縁遠いものになってきました。残念ながら昨今では、プロの書家でさえ墨液で作品をつくる人も珍しくありません。

I visited Ishinomaki city on the day March 11th, just after one year has passed after the disaster. Ishinomaki is one of the most heavily damaged areas in north-east Japan. Ogatsu town in Ishinomaki is famous for producing inkstone. Ogatsu town has a 90% market shere in Japan. Ogatsu Inkstone, a classical artifact with 600 years of tradition and art, was designated by the Minister of International Trade and Industry as a Traditional Craft of Japan in 1985.
After huge Tsunami, Most of town was deadly destroyed. Ogatsu Suzuri Association is on the way of reconstruction. They need long-term support both materially and spiritually.

Inkstone is one of four companions of the first stationary; Suzuri (inkstone), fude (brush), sumi (ink stick), paper. It is pity that recently calligraphers are reluctant to use inkstone because liquid ink is becoming popular.

去る２月１８日、東京・銀座で開催していた『絆』展が終了しました。
皆さまからは、８７枚の作品を買い求めていただきました。有り難うございました。なお売上げの２０％は、東日本大震災のチャリティーに充てられます。
あの大地震から間もなく一年。今も被災者の方々は過酷な運命にじっと耐えながら、支え合って懸命に生きていらっしゃいます。今回の展覧会があたたかな『絆』を広げる機会になれば幸いです。

Charity Exhibition “ bonds ” has ended on the 18th. I thank a lot that I could finally sell 87 pieces. 20 % of sales are donated to the stricken area. Almost one year has passed since the disaster. But victims are still living with all their might in the harsh destiny, supporting each other. I appreciate it if many people could extend warm sympathies for “bonds” through this exhibition.

２月１０日、フレンチレストラン ラ・ロシェルにてパフォーマンスを行いました。
パフォーマンスは２０分ですが、準備に３時間、撤収に２時間かかります。
そんなわけで、当日は朝の５時起きでした。
家を出ると、明け方の空にはまだ十六夜の月が。
西には月が沈み、東には日が昇りかけていました。

I did performance on February 10th at La Rochelle. I need 3 hours for preparation of my performance that lasts only 20 minutes. So I left my house at dawn. I saw moon sinking to the west and sun rising to the east in the morning sky. Then I decided to choose two caracters, "moon" and "sun" , for my performance.

　３月１１日のその日、私はミラノから成田に帰国しました。自宅に着いて、やれやれとトランクを開けたそのとき、立ち上がれないほどの揺れに襲われました。巨大地震のニュースはすぐに世界を駆け巡り、私のところにも海外の友人達から次々と安否を問うメールが届きました。メッセージには「日本のために何か出来ることはないか」というあたたかい言葉。私は国を超えた絆を感じました。
　そして５月、私は再びイタリアへもどり、ミラノでチャリティー展をおこないました。展示作品はすべて「生」の一字。「生」の筆文字と新聞写真を合わせ、被災地で生きる人々の真摯な姿を表しました。僅かひと月足らずで制作した全３２点の「生」は、そのほとんどが被災地への義援金となりました。「日本のために・・・」と言って快く作品を求めてくれた友人たちに心から感謝しています。
　見知らぬ相手同士でも気さくに挨拶を交わして世間話を楽しむ国、それがイタリア。そんな国から日本に帰ると、しばらくの間気になって仕方がないことがあります。電車に乗っても、街を歩いても携帯電話から眼を離そうとしない人たちのことです。まるで周りは眼に入らないかのように。まるで、周りを無視するかのように。「袖すり合うも多生の縁」は既に遠い昔の話になってしまいました。
　でも大震災を経験した後、少しだけ私たちの連帯感が強くなったような気がします。「地震の時どこにいた？ 何をしていた？ どうやって家に帰った？」 しばらくの間、これがだれしも共通の話題となりました。「自分にとって大切な人はだれか、いざ何かあった時真っ先にだれのことを思うか。」 そんな自問を皆がするようになりました。やがて「絆」という言葉がメディアでも巷でも次第に語られはじめました。「勝ち組・負け組」「自己責任」「無縁社会」「孤独死」・・・・。そんなすさんだ言葉たちの中にあって、「絆」という文字が人々の心に一筋の光を投げているように思えました。
　昨年、ミラノで「生」を展示したチャリティー展から９ヶ月が経ち、このたび東京でチャリティー展「絆」を開催することになりました。「絆」展では名前にちなんだ漢字４００字以上を和紙に書きしるしました。壁に貼られた漢字の海のなかから、あなたにとって大切な人の一字をさがしてみてください。その人の名前を見つけたとき、あなたの心にぽっとあたたかな「絆」の灯がともることを願っています。

I came back to Japan on March 11th 2011. The huge earthquake had occurred just when I arrived at my home. The news of the earthquake spread quickly throughout the world. Within hours, I received a tremendous number of messages from abroad worrying about my safety.
After confirming our personal safety, each message concluded " Is there anything I can do for Japan? ". At that time I felt the bonds between friends beyond the border.
In May I came back to Milan and held a charity exhibition. I draw Japanese character “ Live ” on canvas on which a photo of disaster is arranged. 32 pieces of works were almost sold out for donation. I appreciate a lot for courtesy of my friends who donated for Japan.
In Italy people greet friendly in the street even if they do not know each other. When I came back to Japan from Italy, I was worried about Japanese passengers who are too much concentrating on their cellular phone. It seems for me they ignore others around them.
But after the disaster I feel a sense of solidarity among us is improving little by little. “ Where were you at the moment of the earthquake? How did you come back to your home? ” This conversation became very common among us for a while. And we began to ask to ourselves who is the most important for us. Who we will keep in our mind in the serious disaster? Then the Japanese word “ KIZUNA (bonds) ” has become very popular and common in our society.
Nine months have passed since my charity exhibition in Milan. Then the second has opened on February 4th in Tokyo. The theme of this exhibition is “ bonds ”. In the venue I arranged nearly 500 pieces of character written on Japanese traditional paper. All of these characters are related to names of Japanese. Please look for the character that represents the name of your important person. I hope you could tighten the ties when you happen to find the character on the wall.

We Japanese have suffered the severe trial last year. The character that represents the year 2011 was “ Bond“. Bonds of family, friends, Japanese and people in the world. We recognized the importance of relationship between us through the unprecedented disaster. More than 400 characters for name are shown in the venue. Please look for the character that represents the most important person for you. I hope this exhibition would be an occasion for tightening and extending our bonds.
